No, don’t worry – it’s not just you. Instagram really is down right now. According to users of the social media app, Instagram is experiencing a number of technical difficulties this morning including not being able to send Direct Messages (DMs). The gremlins appear to have begun at around 11:30 am with the issues still ongoing over an hour later.
Down Detector, which tracks “when services go down or have outages”, is currently showing a massive spike in reports that Instagram is struggling. In fact, there are over 2,000 mentions which shows this is a pretty big problem for the Meta-owned photo-sharing platform.
Along with that update on Down Detector, fans of the app have also rushed to vent their frustrations on rival social platforms such as X (formerly Twitter).
One user called Atharv said: “Is it me or is everyone else also not able to send DM on Instagram?”
Whilst another named Nihal added: “Is anyone else having issues with Instagram chats, or is it just me? Messages aren’t delivering and show “failed to deliver” after a few minutes. Anyone else experiencing this?”
It’s currently unclear what is causing the gremlins or when things will be back to normal.
What are Instagram DMs?
As Meta explains, “Instagram DMs are an in-app messaging feature that allow you to share and privately exchange text, photos, Reels, and posts with one or more people.
“Instagram DMs are a space for you to connect and collaborate over shared interests with friends.”
Although DMs are currently broken, it seems all other parts of the app are working as normal.
